ENT for Kids Project Details

Sunlight shines through colorful screens and plays upon the white walls. Within this dynamic environment are precisely calibrated examination rooms. These rooms were designed through careful studies of the actions performed during an examination, such as reaching for a tongue depressor or circling around the patient’s chair on a stool.

The design combines lively forms with meticulous studies of the clinic flow resulting in a structure for ENT for Kids that brings a calming joy to pediatric healthcare.

A long, fixed work surface anchors the space at a communal core, passing through structural columns. People and ideas orbit this public nucleus, dubbed “central park,” while the steel wrapper protects more private getaway spaces. An enclosed two-person meeting room fits snugly between the wrapper and existing side walls like a nest.

Hextra Hero Bloodsnow

Breezeblock and cana brava screens can provide security, privacy, and beauty to a space. They are great for a hot, wet climate because they permit cross-ventilation and produce shade. Tropical regionalism features parge (plaster), cement, hardwood, breezeblock, tile, terra cotta, and cana brava (a woody reed-like material). We consider water and foliage to be materials in the architecture, too.

These quiet, unadorned spaces allow the region’s luminous light and lush landscape to take center stage.

They have direct relationships to both water and garden. The primary dining space is located on a raised platform alongside the pool deck.  It is outside -- but shaded from the sun by a generous roof, and situated for optimal cross ventilation. The primary living, lounging, and dining spaces are organized around the pool.  The pool stretches out along the jungle’s edge. Raised on pilings over the most rugged part of the lot, it overlooks the valley and the beach beyond.

The living spaces are organized alongside the pool terrace on one side and garden courtyard on the other.

Shaded from the daytime sun and cooled by a shallow layer of water, the flooded room will be a favorite hangout for friends and family! The primary bedroom suite is located poolside.  It is raised on a platform overlooking the pool and tropical valley beyond.  Carefully considered transparent and solid surfaces control privacy and exposure.  A luxe en-suite bathroom with outdoor shower and soaking tub tucks into the garden. A minimal rock garden, a sculptural stairway, and a rooftop yoga platform are just a few!

While the garage and garden doors blend into the wood, the main entry interrupts it with an irregularly shaped sheet of glass, as though the surface has begun to tear at the kiss line. 

The walls frame a courtyard like a clearing in the forested area along the shore.

Awards & Recognition

The kitchen counter is shifted slightly back from the glass, a thin slab of back-cut soapstone forms a dining island, and the fireplace is transparent on three sides. Polished teak surfaces continue from the walls and ceiling of the master bathroom to the counter, sink, and tub. Private living spaces occupy the far ends of the modules, where the end walls angle toward the tree canopy.

The organization and details of the interior living space reinforce the sense of openness established by the glass.

Floor-to-ceiling, full-length glass on the lakeside façades of both modules allows each to present a distinct, expansive view of the lake and its islands.

Being inside the house feels like floating over the water.

These custom wood components are durable and beautiful.  They use wood in surprising and contemporary ways.  Wood is one of our most ancient and versatile materials. It can be shaped to control color, texture, and lightfastness.  Many Lazor/Office projects feature custom wood applications such as slats, screens, and live edge built-ins.

The wood in these cabins can be finished in a number of ways. Rough hewn wood is textural, while honed wood is smooth. Treated or finished wood retains a warm, rich coloration.  Untreated wood weathers to a silvery gray color and soft texture that lends contrast to the building.  Wood naturally patinas over time, meaning that the building will age gracefully.

The living module includes a den-like space anchored by a wood-burning fireplace and stone wall.  This space is cocooned in wood paneling. The dining and kitchen spaces are bright and open, bracketed by floor to ceiling glass on each side.  These spaces look outward to the landscape beyond. An attached screen porch is the social center of the cabin during warm months.  Featuring a vaulted ceiling and panoramic views, the screen porch is sure to be a family favorite. The bunk and bath pavilions are connected to the living areas via modular links. These links can be either enclosed and conditioned or open air, depending on your preference.  Enclosed links include a built-in desk or bench. The bunk and bath pavilions feature comfortable bedrooms with corner windows, built-in storage, a multi-user bathroom, and an outdoor shower.

In the aWay by Lazor/Office cabins, we have combined elements from primitive, utilitarian cabins with the marvels and comforts of contemporary living. The cabins are both rustic and refined, retaining a connection to the “cabin life” while being comfortable for both weekends away and long term stays.

One aspect was reversed. That which was solid became transparent, a window onto the world outside versus a place previously entirely closed onto itself. This began a career-long interest of the architect in the juxtaposition of transparency and opaque spaces. In the meantime, the gardeners grew plants.

Much remained the same: the simple, primary form, how one enters, the wood rafters and the ‘secret’ trap door to the chthonic world below.

The original board formed foundation was retained and the wood shingled gable roof that sat on the ground was replaced with a glass roof, a replacement of sorts, to recall the root cellar roof, place of special memories for generations.

The residence was outfitted with new and refined bedrooms and baths. The residence occupies a lakeside site in the shoreline prairie zone, which has been restored from an agricultural field.

The existing residence was reshaped to open kitchen and living spaces to each other.

Mono 2 Project Details

Interspersed with glass, reusable rough-sawn lumber defines a meeting room with salvaged barn doors. Communal eating and working takes place at a long table crafted of the same wood.

Wood and glass building elements are stacked on the floor, hung from the ceiling, and slotted together to form these enclosures in a direct, sustainable manner.

An idea wall for collaborative brainstorming runs parallel to rows of individual work tables, keeping employees connected.

Walls frame deep views throughout the interior as private rooms of different sizes are pushed in while box windows are pulled out, focusing views.

The entry hall opens out onto a deck, surrounding you with a view of the lake through the trees.

Warm oranges and yellows around the windows complement the cooler tone of the wood that covers the interior and exterior walls. A breezeway featuring an outdoor shower passes all the way through the cabin, a stone fireplace anchors the shared living and dining space between floor-to-ceiling windows. Two compact bedrooms are immersed in the tree canopy where the hill drops farther below.

Natural colors and materials draw the outdoors in and direct the interior outward.

Siamese Cyclops Exterior Hero

This barn sits on a modernist plinth, on a river, rather than a field. An impossible cantilevered roof speaks of a wall that fell away. It is skinned in taut, seemingly minimalist surfaces and clean geometries provide more clues that something else is going on: a subtle equivocation between historical and modernist forms.

While familiar to the Montana barn form, unusual conditions begin to present themselves.

It was regionally sourced and cut, milled, and finished onsite by local tradespersons, from 'log hogs’ slicing the trunks of fallen site trees to cabinet makers. Its many characteristics -- cut, grain, finish, thickness, texture, ‘irregularity' -- are on full display. Building-scale screens made of live edge wood slabs shield floor-to-ceiling glass walls. A sliding wood shutter regulates light and thermal gain through a big ‘hay loft’ window upstairs. A deeply cantilevered eave clad shelters an outdoor deck atop a wood plinth, providing refuge from intense southern sun. Kitchen cabinets showcase patterns of heartwood and sapwood. A continuous live-edge bench follows the perimeter of the outdoor terrace, promoting sprawling hospitality.

Wood, specifically Douglas Fir, constitutes the primary material 'solid' of the project.

The bones of a wood frame are infilled with glass, making a glass room within the ‘barn’ to create a secure habitation within a wooden ruin and entirely wood surfaces bring the sound and smell of Montana inside. In the voluminous interior of the ‘barn’, distortions of traditional barn geometry form pathways, balconies and gathering spaces that frame the river and mountains - heightening one’s awareness of the majestic landscape and big skies of Montana.

A contrary, yet complementary, architecture presents itself.

Like a move in a Jenga game, thereby making the corner a micro void for solitary contemplation of the water beyond.

To open a view to the lake, visible off the corner of the stack, the mid level block is pushed back from the street.

These walls shape deep spatial frames that conjoin interior space with exterior space. We hope that the contrast between the views reveals the essential nature of each landscape type, rewarding the quiet eye.

Stretch House Front Exterior Hero

A triangular, deep space portal in the corner of the courtyard is aligned with the path to the dock while a second portal makes a space for the hot tub and outdoor shower. Together, they create a sequence of sculptural, elusive frames to the treescape beyond.

The horseshoe footprint creates a courtyard for arrival and gathering.

Below, a wall of glass set to the wood studs looks to the lake beyond and following the abstract geometry of the building, the glass turns up the stairs. A 20 foot long glass barn door pulls away, transforming the kitchen and deck into one space. In contrast, a sprinkling of small, hinged panels bring in fresh air and the natural light cycles while offering tightly framed views. The dynamic light and strategically placed openings blur the relationship between indoors and out.

Within the shelter, a central loft optimizes space, offering a place away to hang out or sleep and a stadium view to the activity below.

This made for a playful mystery of abstract form that inhabits the woods. The building is clothed in two materials: galvanized, corrugated metal outside and birch plywood inside, materials that are both ‘shed’ and minimalist.

We turned to the ‘shed’ vernacular, pulling, pushing, bending and twisting it into an abstraction of ‘shed’.

The Triangle House links nature and shelter through an inquisitive, abstract architecture.

The exhibit opted for reusable, reconfigurable exhibition elements rather than traditional build-in-place stud walls and single-use vitrines.

The lounge-like environment was built to be reused.

The Thumb House Project Details

This disruption forms a secluded study, where a window dips down over the desk to present an intimate view through a field of tree trunks to the lake. Wood shutters can be opened to bring in air, expanding the rooms in spring and summer.

A thumb-like extension disrupts the rectangular geometry of the house.

Week'nder Project Details

Lending the cabin a rustic feel balanced by a precise coordination of colors and textures. Nature drifts in along a gradual entry walkway punctuated with a screen of thin wood posts.

Materials at hand—plywood, pine, and corrugated and smooth metal.

Week'ender Awards & Recognition

Floor-to-ceiling windows open the main living space to the cabin’s surroundings at either side. An open plan unites the array of surface qualities that animate the exterior, clarifying their connection. Between the module walls and the cathedral ceiling, clerestory windows bring in light.

A screen porch extends one module, offering a unique view into the woods.

While the white-walled kitchen and sleeping bunks are carved from the plywood modules. Continuing out from the thickened bedroom walls, metal window fins are white inside so the bunks are filled with glowing light.
